How I Learned What Teachers Feel

Such an irony when we see how kindergarten child answer their teacher’s question nowadays. Most of them will answer it with doctor, nurse, pilot, police, but only few of them answer ‘teacher’, whereas they meet teachers every day.

Now, move to our teenage life. As we can see, only few of us want to be a teacher. Many of student said that being a teacher is the same as getting low-medium salary, busy with correction things, and have to work almost the entire day. But actually, being a teacher is also a great deal (although I’m not dreaming to be a teacher :) ). You can face people every day, gaining popularity among pupils *:p and the most challenging thing is to practice how to speak in an interesting way without reducing any important information.

In this post, I would like to share how it feels to be a teacher. I have once being a teacher among my friends in Vespa Family (XI Science 4). I wasn’t teaching alone. I was accompanied by Michelle, one of my beloved friends :) We were teaching on Tuesday, January 14th, 2014. Do you remember what we were teaching about, guys? We taught history, with Qin Dynasty of China as the sub-topic :D

Since we were the first performer, we felt a bit confused because we had no example besides the real teacher :o The first thing we made was the lesson plan (just like the real teacher). After arranging the lesson plan, we actualized that. We tried to make interesting slides to present in front of them. We also provided a video about Qin Dynasty, so we thought it will be interesting. And we packed the history into a great story so the pupil won’t be bored. One thing to be grateful for is because we were the first one, we weren’t given any challenge, i.e. wear different outfit, teaching outdoor, etc.

Our teaching lesson was an unforgettable experience, especially for both of us as the teacher. It was pretty hard to make the pupils pay attention to our lesson. But once we got it, we had to keep the attention alive =D Even though they were paying attention, it couldn’t guarantee that they understood the history. We had to patiently answer all their questions.

At the end of the lesson, it was our turn (the teachers) to ask questions to our pupils. I felt very happy at that moment, watching our pupils were very eager to raise their hands and answer our questions. They won’t always be right, but the process of making it right was the teacher’s biggest responsibility.

For us (as student), this project can improves our ‘public speaking’ ability. With this kind of project, we can also know the difficulties in being a teacher. We also know how it feels when the student don’t pay attention to the lesson, and how it feels when they participate actively in class. So often we find that the students we were trying to INSPIRE are the one that ends up INSPIRING us to be a better teacher. A good teacher must remember what Benjamin Franklin said reflecting the student: "Tell me and I forget, teach me and I remember, involve me and I learn."

Teachers are our every-day-friends at school, whom we meet every day, who teach us every day. Teachers may not be perfect, but they have a great passion on making a better education for us. So, respect your teachers :) even though maybe we don’t want to be a teacher someday.
